The Lower Churnet Conservation Group was set up in the 1980s to address theats to the area of the Lower Churnet Valley at that time, for example the expansion of Alton Towers and the development of Cotton College. Recently the group had become inactive. In June 2011, however , John Higgins past chairman and Lilian Hodgkinson called an EGM at Cauldon Lowe Village Hall to relaunch the group.

The meeting was well attended by members of the public from the surrounding area. At the meeting a new committee was elected and new members invited to join to set up an open forum to influence the future of the Churnet Valley.  Read more about the vision of the newly formed Churnet Valley Conservation Society
